Reply with quote | #3 | Hoff....just wondering...if Louie is redshirting, why did he wrestle? Just to keep in shape for any open tournaments that he may enter or what? Thanks. |

Reply with quote | #4 | wrstlngmm, Pure speculation on my part, but my thinking is that because four of the 10 expected starters were not able to compete today, the coaching staff may have asked Lou to participate as a treat to the fans. In addition, with such a young lineup, the opportunity to get guys like Franco and Banks as many matches as possible is important. Therefore, Lou's involvement helped to accomplish this goal. Furthermore, as you said, getting Lou mat time to keep him sharp is equally important. While the goal is still to RS him at this point, you never know what could happen during the course of a long season...For whatever reason, should the staff need to pull him from the redshirt, it is essential that he be at or close to top form...Hopefully this does not happen. I get the feeling that both Lou and Cody are excited about wrestling together in 2011. While there is no perfect number, I'd like Lou to get around 20-30 matches (unattached) this season. |

Reply with quote | #5 | wow banks beat vaith.
does that mean banks is starting now?
also why not have rugg wrestle banks. i am sure he will wrestle as many tournaments as he can as unattached during his redshirt year. he can do midlands on his own as well. |

Lawrence,
I admit that I too was surprised by the result at 141. However, while I have not been in the room to see it for myself, I had heard that the two talented young men had been very close throughout preseason workouts. As it common among true freshmen, Vaith struggled to get out from bottom. Because blue-chip recruits have become so accustomed to being the one in control (on top), it sometimes takes them a short while to get used to having to fight from underneath....I am not in the least bit concerned about Luke. I have no doubt that before all is said and done, he will have developed into the "gamer" that he was recruited to be.
With regard to who starts, my thinking is that the job is still up for grabs..In fact, since they have seemingly been so close, my thinking is that whoever puts in the better week of practice will be the one who gets the call to start on Sunday...I am confident that the one selected will do a fine job representing the University against Buffalo.
As it pertains to Lou, Midlands is certainly an option. I will also think that the Nittany Lion Open, The NC State Open (which HU will also compete at), the Long Island Open, as well as several are options to keep him in shape (and allow him to perhaps experiment with some stuff)...Ruggirello will stay busy. He is regarded as having an immense work ethic.
