Many older wrestling coaches believe that too much competition at the youth age is bad; they say it causes burnout. I believe that it is the type of competition, not the act of competing, that causes so many kids to quit. Tournaments are setup as elimination events, which are highly stressful for both the athlete and his family... couple it with the necessity to cut weight to keep up, and you've got a recipe for burnout. Not every kid will burnout, but too many do...
Elimination tournaments are the foundation of what wrestling is all about: determining the champion; but they are not an effective way for managing the long term retention of children.
Round-robin events fall short due to there being a complete loser and a complete winner in each bracket.
Live pairing is the future of developmental wrestling.
