Worst run tourney of all time. Wrestling didn't start today until close to 3pm, most kids had 1 match at most when they called it for the day a little after 8. It was just a disaster. And tomorrow isn't looking much better, they didn't knock too many kids out, I think only one wrestleback round? And even the little kids, the bantams, didn't get finished or even close to finish. A lot of people left, there were problems with the brackets, the bout slips, crowd control, food, bathrooms, parking. Everything.

It has been a terrible tournament for years, and I think a lot of people were fed up after LAST season and gave it one more shot because of the new location. And it turns out this was the worse of them all.

It's another case of upstate, in this case Section 9, taking advantage of us. Long Island basically made up half the tournament and put a good $10,000 plus into their pockets, probably closer to $20,000 with $8 a head admission, $3 hot dogs and everything else.

I would be shocked if anyone went back next year. It is absolutely horrible.

I'm driving down in a few minutes.  This area has had time to prove they can effectively run this event- They obviously cannot.  Perhaps a group from LI will bid on it.  Every year it gets the most complaints, and every year it goes to this area because no one else bids on it.

Alos, although it is easiest to just genrealize and say LI is being taken advantage of, realize that this event is run by NYUSA wrestling.  They are the primary benefactors, and the organization that must answer for the blame, not any particular geographical area.

I've heard it was a horro show....I'll post more thoughts if I ever make it back tonight

I think you will find NYUSA Wrestling puts the tournament out to bids and gets a small amount per entrant and the LOC runs the event and keeps everything else.  I may be wrong but I think this is the case.

LI has always stayed away from bidding because everyone says no one would want to come this far or cross the bridge but we do know how to run a tournament

They turned help down and now they have a mess. This is to bad for the kids who worked so hard all year. Help is needed there are now company's that do this in NJ PA ect they have this stuff down to a science USANY must do something to clean up this mess.

jack that would be a good spot for youth states.

why didn't nyusa agree to that.

it's amazing. we can send a man to the moon but we can't run a wrestling
tournament in NY.

Some things never change. The kid states has been run horrible since its inception. Several years ago Tom Giaramita and I along with several other long islanders wanted to have this tournament. If we are serious about wanting this event i will do it. I have run many tournaments in the past along with current tournaments such as the Long Island Knockout duals. These kids (everyone in New York ) deserves a top notch event. i hope the rest of the tournament turns out we'll.

Just talked to the head of USA NJ he is up here and cannot get over how bad this tournament is being run. Our whole states Jr. wrestling program looks like crap. Sec.11 has a problems with sec.9, sec. 9 has problems with up state ,up state don't like L.I. sec.1 don't like anyone this all stinks. If we as a state ever wish to keep up with PA. NJ. OH. FL. we must put the kids first and work together. There is no reason we as a state can not fix this mess our kids deserve better than this.

you know we'd be there.

Not sure how it works.  at one point the older event the state was keeping everything and putting it toward Fargo and just cutting the LOC a stipend

haven't been involved for a few years so not sure if it's change, or how they bid out the Youth States

I was there today- it started 30 min late and was running fairly smoothly, but the hole they dug themselves yesterday was too big.  I left at 2pm and they hadn't started the semis yet

i just heard some of our wrestlers and their parents had to leave the kids have school monday.

i have an idea that may be better. perhaps we only do the state tournament
for grades 5/6 and 7/8. that way more resources would be used for the more
important grades.

I have to add some comments on the worst tournament ever run. I have been attending the kids tournament since the first year. That is seven years in a row because I have three different kids who have wanted to go. Each year, I pray that they get it right. From a small venue to not enough table help, bad food, lousy weather, no seats, etc, etc. I always say, we are not going back but my kids want to go with their friends from the club. Friday: 3 people at the registration. No sheets to confirm who is entered into the tournament. Everyone stands in line for 1 hour. Then everyone is told to write their kids name down along with his weight and section. We run to the weigh in line. Now this is great... 3 scales, no security, chaos. The smaller kids get pushed aside. This is another hour of kids in the main gym, waiting in no socks and uniforms, freezing. No parents allowed over here. The weather outside was frightful. I was waiting for Santa to walk inside. It was snowing which is not their fault. 2 hours to start on the 1st day..
Next day, the tournament is pushed back 3 hours because of the snow. Ha, Ha, Ha. The roads were clean. Not necessary. Not enough seats, high admission price, food was very expensive. The head table is surrounded by yelling, screaming and out of control parents. The State Police were called in later that night to clear the front table. The bracket sheets were messed up because there were three computer programs used and it would not take to a spread sheet. Not sure what happened here. Another delay. Start time after 3:00 P.M. The brackets were sent out with many mistakes. People left, Out of control The PA system was terrible. My kid who is a 7 year old bantam did not wrestle until 8:30 P.M. Wrestling stopped at 9:30 P.M. I was running the mats for this age group on the end of the Gym,m with no PA system. I asked for the bracket sheets to get the kids out and speed things up. No one heard their names called out. The computer was only giving out bracket sheets with the speed of the tournament with respect to Novice, Midget and Schoolboy. Finally, the printer broke and they sent someone out to purchase a laser at 7:00 P.M. The next day was much better and they fixed up the brackets. Another section must take this over. Lets move on. Registration: One table for each section. Sign in and weigh in at your section table. No weigh in lines, etc. You deal with your section at your area. In and out. Brackets sheets are made out that night. Head Table is off the floor and away from the public. Perhaps start the tournament on Friday night. The tournament is set up for three days to get some money into the area. Wrong idea. Over 700 wrestlers, 8 mats. Not enough space.. The computer is nice but the brackets should have been at each table as a back-up. 6 year old kids waited 2 days to wrestle 1 match. One section 8 kid wrestled his 1st match on Sunday  in a 12 man bracket. I know there were some problems but this can not happen again. USA Wrestling is wrong. Pay a professional to come in and run the tournament. I ran the entire bantam bracket and had people wrestling quicker. I was only delayed because the computer could not make updates. Lets do it by hand next time.

USA must do a better job than this next year if you must charge more money and get some pro's to do the job than do it but do it right. Enough is enough!!!

In my area of the State very few youth events are run by USA Wrestling.

My Club Staff and I worked very hard to increase our numbers.  This was many of our parents first opportunity to interface with USA Wrestling.

It will be very difficult to get them to return next year

unfortunately having this tourney run downstate will not produce a representative nys turnout. it really should be run near Binghamton so it is accessible to all and it will also be a well run event. Sec 9 has been running this tourney for years and they just do not get it.

I don't care where the event is held next year, but it needs to be different people running it. For the amount of money they made, they could pay someone. Pay Steve Meehan and the crew that runs the HS counties (if they'd be willing to do it.) Even pay the Blue Wave guys that run the kids counties. Pay those New Jersey guys or the Connecticut guys or anyone. But this was the nail in the coffin, the even can't be held by these people.

And speaking of the psycho parents, this event had the worst security I've seen any any major tournament in my life, They checked your coaching card at the door, but all that meant was you didn't have to pay the $8. Nobody checked your braclet when you went on the mats. People did whatever they wanted to do whenever they wanted to do it. At the Suffolk kids counties they had 2 goons in front of the head table, you couldn't get anywhere near it. Here you had people literally coming of the streets and going on the computer where the brackets were. Never again.

CHAOTIC , MISERABLE , FRUSTATING, DREADFUL , etc . just a few  terms to be used for this years version of  "Tournament for LI Suckers " . We(LI) probably brought in over roughly $40,000 in revenue to the  SEC 9 area and once again we get crapped on . Not only was it the last hurrah (or laugh ) for this area but on top of this event being a total debacle the attitude that the people running  this event displayed was even worse !  NEVER AGAIN SUFFOLK !

Very surprised,

Connecticut hosts a USA sanctioned Tournament every weekend, and they are by far the smoothest run tournaments we go to , definitely worth the drive from upstate,ny and their kids state championships are excellent. New York should definitely take a page from their book to see how these state tournaments are supposed to be run. Hopefully we'll get it right for the kids very soon.

i must say Section 1 does a fine job as well in brewster, Carmel, to name a few
